Family Partners Patricia and Kurshaw Jackson and their Daughter Kurshine ![]() Victims of Hurricane Katrina last September, the Jackson family came to Fort Worth from New Orleans for temporary shelter and fell in love with the city and decided to make it their permanent home. "In our apartment in New Orleans," Patricia said, "our daughter could not play outside. There were drugs and shootings and it was not safe. Where we are now it is much different." "I could only dream of owning a home before," Patricia said. "We would not be able to afford to purchase a home without the Habitat program. I think owning a home will be great for me and my family. We will have something of our own and something we can be proud of. And our daughter will have a yard to play in." Patricia, who obtained a job within two weeks of arriving in Fort Worth following the hurricane, works as a nursing assistant. Kurshaw is a concrete finisher and has been able to find work throughout the time they have lived in Fort Worth. "Kurshaw works well with his hands and I have good organizational skills and work well with people. I also love to work with kids, paint and I am an excellent team player," Patricia said. "We want to be able help in our new community as much as possible." As a family, the Jacksons enjoy watching movies, having BBQs, walking in the mall and playing board games. Their future in the new city holds many dreams. "We can't wait to live in our new Habitat home and have a nice flower garden in the front yard," Patricia said. "I want to further my education in the nursing field. For my husband, I want him to be able to work with a permanent company doing the concrete work he has done for years and that he enjoys." "We want to live in a crime and drug-free neighborhood with neighbors who look out for each other. We look forward to that in our new home," she added. |
